Colonel Gouverneur Kemble Warren (1830-1882), second commander of the Duryee Zouaves, was a West Point-educated professional whose dedication and military skills were invaluable to his regiment. Warren later served as Chief Topographical Engineer of the Army of the Potomac, and as commander of the Fifth Corps.

Lt. Col. Hiram Duryea (1834-1914), the third commander of the 5th New York, was a strict disciplinarian, nicknamed "Black and Tan" by the Zouaves who learned to respect this strident martinet. A brave soldier, he earned the respect of his subordinates. Duryea's family owned the largest starch works in the U.S., at Glen Cove, Long Island, and he was the driving force behind the regimental monument at Manassas. In their summer 1861 encampment near Fort Monroe, a convivial group of 5th New York officers and visiting guests enjoyed a champagne brunch provided by New York lawyer George Templeton Strong (seated, second from left). Stereocard by George Stacy

In the 1890s uniformed members of the 5th New York Veterans Association posed outside their meeting rooms in Manhattan. The old Zouaves were a familiar sight in Memorial Day parades and G.A.R. encampments.

In July 1861 a motley group of Duryee's Zouaves posed for photographer George Stacy at their camp near Fort Monroe, Virginia. Hastily and poorly made, the unit's first version of the Zouave uniform featured a blue fez tassel; the color later changed to yellow. Stacy stereocard.

This stereoview appears to show an amputation scene inside a tent at Fortress Monroe (also known as Fort Monroe), Hampton, Virginia, in 1861. Although realistic, the scene was in fact staged by members of the 5th New York Infantry (Zouaves)—the patient did not have his arm amputated for the photograph, but such a sight would have been all too common in the Trans-Mississippi and other theaters during the Civil War.

Fort Monroe was completed in 1834 and named for President James Monroe. During the Civil War it was used as a base for the Union blockade of the Atlantic coast and a staging area for other army and navy expeditions.

Stereo View by G. W. Thorne, New York, N.Y.

TWO 1/6TH AMBROTYPE IMAGES OF UNIDENTIFIED 5TH NEW YORK ZOUAVE CORPORAL

The subject appears in uniform dress in one image, and in civilian dress in the other. The uniformed image is a ruby ambrotype which comes in full leather case with oval brass matte & blue velvet interior. It features a clean-shaven, early twenty-ish male in a seated pose, clad with distinctive 5th New York red piping & corporal stripes, with kepi sitting adjacent to left wrist. Exhibits light tinting of cheeks and uniform. Also exhibits gray emulsion round the outer oval edges, most pronounced in the lower section. Image quite sharp in other respects. Case outer extremities exhibit light wear and rubbing. Else VG.

Second image features same subject in civilian clothes. Half case ambrotype with brass matte. Subject wears jacket and white shirt with black cravat. Image exhibits the same tinting and same gray emulsion round its oval edges as its mate. Four small chipped spots, between the subject's elbows and coat, and at the bottom trouser area. Light wear to outer case leather. Highly attractive nonetheless, with accompanying Zouave image. Superb Zouave collectible.
